Talent Beyond The Field

Posted in Recognition on October 12th, 2009 by Andy

Daniel Taylor, senior lineman, was recognized earlier this year as a winner in the Memphis International Airport Art Contest.

Memphis International Airport’s busy passenger walkway connectors between concourses A, B and C have a bright new look with 45 new works of art created by talented students from Memphis City and Shelby County Schools. The masterpieces were created as part of the Airport’s annual art contest entitled Memphis, Its Music, Sights and Sounds.

The contest provides students the opportunity to turn what they love about their city into works of art that everyone can enjoy whether you live in Memphis or another city. The students not only recognized some of our greatest cultural assets, but in the process showed remarkable artistic perception, creativity and potential.

Memphis International Airport worked closely with Memphis City and Shelby County Schools, Memphis College of Art, the University of Memphis’ Art Department, a panel of local artists and several area businesses to bring the contest to fruition. The panel of judges evaluated the works for theme, concept, composition and craftsmanship.

More than 250 students from 24 schools submitted preliminary entries, from which 45 were selected to become paintings for the Airport’s exhibition along the walkway connectors. The collaborative efforts were designed to encourage art students in the community to appreciate the artistic heritage of the City of Memphis. Students created large-scale, museum-quality, original paintings for this competition.
