This is what a neighborhood rivalry between two highly-ranked teams in The Commercial Appeal’s Dandy Dozen is supposed to be like.
Third-ranked Whitehaven appeared headed for another rout over their rivals when the Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead. But the Fairley defense blanked Whitehaven for the next three quarters, allowing the offense to send the game into overtime.
But the Tigers (2-0) regained their composure in overtime, coming away with a 20-14 victory over No. 7 Fairley.

Fairley Football ‘08 started the year with a bang against Westwood. The opening kickoff was returned for a touch down by Derrick Murrell; but it was called back for an illegal block in the back. After receiving the ball on the 45, the Bulldogs slowed on offense but were assisted by Kendrick(Bronco) Gray’s fumble recovery on the Westwood 40. From there the Dogs drove it in for a touchdown on a 7 yard run by Murrell. The extra point was good by Roregis (Hot Rod) Garrett. Later in the 1st quarter the Bulldogs scored again on a 85 yard TD reception hookup between Devin Starks and Fred Garrett, and a 2 yard TD run by Justin Elliot. Defensive highlights in the 1st quarter included a fumble recovery by Wayne Lauderdale on the Fairley 38 and a 65 yard TD interception by Martavius (Tay) Neloms.
The 2nd quarter was highlighted by touchdown runs from Xavier Clay (7 yards) and Justin Elliot (20 yards). The first half ended with the Dogs up 42-0. From that point on, the mercy rule was instituted to help the struggling Longhorns from Westwood.
The 3rd and 4th quarters moved along rapidly and good plays were turned in by the Fairley defense. Carl Lewis and Jason Smith chalked up sacks and losses for the Longhorns.
The final highlight of the game was a 90 yard punt return by Jamarcus Hines that capped the Fairley victory. Final score Fairley 49 Westwood 0. Follow 2008 Photos - Flickr link for photos.

The 2008 edition of the Fairley High School Football team finished it’s pre-season with a dominating performance over the Wooddale Cardinals in tonight’s Jamboree. The Bulldogs won the 15 minute scrimmage 14-0 with touchdowns by Devin Stark and Fred Garrett. Stark also won the offensive player of the game award.
Fairley finished the pre-season with a record of 7-2-1 in 7 on 7 competition with a runner-up finish in the big 7 on 7 tournament at Briarcrest High School. The team finished with wins over schools such as White Station, East, and Bishop Byrne. Their record for pre-season scrimmages was an impressive 3-0 with wins over Christian Brothers, Craigmont, and Kirby.
The 2008 regular season commences next Saturday with the Fairley Bulldogs playing Westwood at 5:00pm at Whitehaven Stadium.
Go Bulldogs. All the way to State!
